PRIDE (Promoting Responsilibility, Individual Development and Empowerment)

The Center's PRIDE Program provides services and supports to individuals who experience developmental disabilities in the Southern Kenai Peninsula catchment area.  The PRIDE Program provides a variety of services through the Grant Unit and the Medicaid Waiver Unit, assisting individuals in developing service options that meet their individual needs.  Services are based upon what the individual wants and needs in order to succeed in their chosen environments.

Waiver Services

The Medicaid Waiver Unit develops & administers Medicaid Waivers, which are a funding source available to DD consumers who have been selected for services & who require significant support to prevent an institutional placement, live safely at home, & in some cases maintain employment.  Currently the federal government pays 50% of the cost of the Waivers, considerable savings to the State general fund.  In order to be considered for Waiver services, an individual must be on a waitlist for services &/or experience a crisis that puts their health & safety at risk.   Once selected for services, the consumer, family members, & other significant individuals form a team to design individualized, comprehensive services, which allow for maximum independence in a safe environment of the consumer’s choice.  Being selected for full services through the Waiver Program is an exciting opportunity.  Services are designed to follow a consumer throughout their lifetime, wherever they live in the state, & to change as their needs & wants change.

Grant Services

Grant Services are funded entirely from State dollars and provide services such as Respite Care, Individualized Assistance and Core Funds.

• Respite Care: Respite Care is a planned, short-term, time limited service that gives families who have dependents who experience moderate to severe developmental disabilities “time-out” while providing safe, loving care.

Individuals who experience developmental disabilities often have limited opportunities to participate in normal social experiences of others.  Respite Care provides a chance for parents to regain their own strength and enthusiasm for life; it also offers the individual with a developmental disability a positive experience with adults and children other than their own family.

• Individualized Services:  Individualized Services are driven by the desires and needs of the consumer and family.  Funded Individualized consumers will participate in identifying desired services and supports, in determining how services are received, what type of lifestyle they have, and in which life areas they will need help. Individualized Services may include: case management, behavior management, individualized skills training, residential and transportation services and/or other services identified by individual consumers.

• Core Funds:  Core Funds are available to selected  consumers & used to purchase goods &/or services that address the individual’s disability.  Funds must be spent in compliance with the State grant regulations.
